The Associated Press‘ executive editor and senior vice president of news, Kathleen Carroll, has announced she will step down at the end of 2016. The veteran journalist plans to retire after 14 years leading the news services’ worldwide news-gathering operations, which has included four presidential elections, turmoil in the Middle East, and countless high profile national and world news stories. Carroll was named executive editor in 2002, but worked for the AP previously in Washington, California, New Jersey and Texas. She has served as Washington bureau chief for Knight Ridder Newspapers, and also worked at the San Jose Mercury News, The Dallas Morning News and International Herald Tribune across her decades-long career.
